According to the overall scientific framework of SDIM and the current situation of development of space technology for disaster mitigation in Asian developing countries and priority field in the world, SDIM conducted the demonstration work of “Cooperative Research Program on Asian Space Technology for Disaster Mitigation”. After several rounds of discussions, SDIM prepared for materials related to report, organization and execution of subjects under the program. Currently, the program mainly covers the following areas: 1) research on flood mitigation in Asia, 2) research on drought mitigation in Asia, 3) research on earthquake mitigation in Asia, 4) database system and shared platform on space technology for disaster mitigation in Asia, and 5) free exploration.

The cooperative research program highlights the characteristics of regional cooperation and serves the scientific and technological cooperation of developing countries. The research program is carried out under the framework of cooperation with Asian developing countries, and selects the natural disasters that are typical in the cooperative countries as research object according to the demand of these countries for space technology for disaster mitigation, moreover, SDIM pays special attention to the expanding cooperation between its experts and the international network of TWAS. All researches were conducted under the overall scientific framework of SDIM, and the lateral cooperation for developing countries among various subjects. Different from other disaster research programs, it highlighted the cooperative research on space technology for disaster mitigation in developing countries, namely, on the basis of space technology, SDIM assisted the partners in enhancing their capability of coping with disasters from a new perspective and through cooperation. Therefore, the research team includes scientists from developing countries and young scientists are welcome to join the team.
