SDIM co-organized the International Symposium on Earth Observation for Maritime Silk Road (EMSR) in Sanya, Hainan from November 25 to 27, 2015 and specially organized sessions on space technology for disaster reduction to support the S&T cooperation of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, promote the communication and cooperation between countries along the Maritime Silk Road in the space technology area, discuss how to use space technology to develop the Maritime Silk Road Economic Belt, and provide a high-level academic exchange platform for experts and scholars in ASEAN countries and neighbouring countries and regions. With SDIM Director Academician Guo Huadong and Mayor of Sanya Wu Yanjun serving as the Chairman, The EMSR attracted over 300 delegates from 28 countries including China, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Australia, the Netherlands, Canada and the United Kingdom. At the meeting, the Sanya Declaration on Launching International Cooperation in Building the Maritime Silk Road was released and the Letter of Intent on Building the Collaborative Earth Observation Network for the Maritime Silk Road was signed.
