Earth Observations in Support of National Strategies for Disaster-risk Management Whitepaper Release
March 19.2015
The year of 2015 saw the launch of the new global disaster reduction framework and we've been active in promoting and participating in the preparation for the world disaster reduction framework programme. In March 2015, the UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDRR), held once every decade, was held in Sendai, Japan. Over 20 state heads and 6,500-plus delegates from 187 countries attended the conference and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon addressed the opening ceremony. During the conference, CAS-TWAS SDIM co-hosted the working session “Earth Observations and High Technology to Reduce Risks” with the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), Group on Earth Observations (GEO), Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS), European Space Agency (ESA), German Aerospace Center (DLR), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and UN Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM). Together with the abovementioned a dozen of international organizations, CAS-TWAS SDIM co-released the Earth Observations in Support of National Strategies for Disaster-risk Management whitepaper, and promoted the formation of an international plan framework for global space technology for disaster reduction under the Sendai Disaster Reduction Framework: 2015-2030 in support of national strategies.
The WCDRR is held once in every decade. The first two editions of it produced the Yokohama Strategy and Plan of Action for a Safer World and the Hyogo Framework for Action, respectively. The release of the Earth Observations in Support of National Strategies for Disaster-Risk Management has increased SDIM's influence in the international disaster reduction community.
